The two documentarians who made the Oscar-nominated Jesus Camp, Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady, have turned their cameras on Detroit, feeling it "may well be a harbinger of things to come for the rest of the country." In an excerpt of their new documentary, called Dismantling Detroit, Ewing and Grady look at a group of men who use American metal, in the form of vans and pickup trucks, to dismantle American metal, in the form of Detroit buildings.

The point is to get to scrap metal, and scavenging trade that has led to issues like power outages when thieves cut telephone lines to get to the copper. The men in Dismantling are likewise said to be engaged in illegal activity, but the results of their activity seem to be no more than one less abandoned building on the block.

Head to the The New York Times or YouTube to watch the clip and listen to a few other Detroiters' takes on what might be happening, and why. Fair warning, the video contains some explicit, Not Safe For Work language.

New Ford Focus Now Available to Download for The Sims 3, the World’s Most Popular Life Simulation Video Game

DEARBORN, Mich., June 8, 2011 – The Ford Focus has moved from driveway to computer as part of The Sims 3, the world’s most popular life simulation video game.

Players of The Sims 3 are now able to download the all-new 2012 Focus sedan as part of the new Focus Neon Nights package.

It’s the second time Focus has been a part of The Sims line of games – the first was in The Sims 2. Electronic Arts is creator of The Sims, a title that has sold more than 145 million copies.

“Over the years, more than 8 million Ford models have been downloaded by players who have demonstrated in numbers and verbal feedback that they love and appreciate Ford vehicles,” said Steve Seabolt, vice president, Global Brand Partnerships at Electronic Arts. “Self-expression is a key personality trait of Sims players; a car like the new Focus that has a lot of personality is perfectly in sync with what resonates.”

The Sims 3 is a life simulation game that lets players create lifelike Sims characters with unique personalities, take them anywhere in the neighborhood, design and build their surroundings, give them goals and lifetime wishes, and ultimately determine whether to fulfill their destinies – giving them a lifetime of happiness and rewards, or not.

The new Focus sedan is available for free download in numerous colors.

Ford also provides players with items that go along with Focus as part of the Neon Nights package. The various virtual items players get for downloading the car are:

One male Ford T-shirt
One female Ford T-shirt
A high-end stereo
A set of neon lights that can be incorporated into the Sims virtual world

“Our involvement with The Sims 3 demonstrates how Ford is looking for alternate ways to talk to the consumer outside of print, television and radio,” said Brian McClary, Ford social and emerging media specialist. “Gaming is a key area we are focusing on and The Sims has proved it can be an effective channel.”

McClary said the marketing team decides what vehicles to include in games such as The Sims 3 based on numerous factors. In the case of the new Focus, for example, the goal is to reach target consumers, build brand awareness and gauge what vehicles are most popular.

The Sims 3 is a good tool to do both because it is part of such a large market.

The video game market is expected to grow from $51.7 billion in 2010 to $81.1 billion in 2016, according to the recently released Strategy Analytics Global Video Game Market Forecast.

EA said the launch of The Sims 3 was its most successful ever with 1.4 million copies sold in the first week alone.

And an internal EA study found 28 percent of players drive Ford vehicles in real life.

The Ford Escape Hybrid, Fusion, Edge, Mustang GT and an earlier-model Focus were in The Sims 2game.

Fiesta was made available for The Sims 3 PC/Mac version in late 2010. It is available in hatchback or sedan bodystyle as part of the Fiesta Urban Streetscape package that includes various items for players to use in their game such as signs that say things such as “Hot Stuff Crossing!” More details can be found athttp://store.thesims3.com/fiesta.

Between The Sims 2 and The Sims 3, Ford vehicles have been downloaded by players more than 8 million times. The Fiesta has been downloaded more than 200,000 times. The Mustang GT from The Sims 2 has been the most downloaded Ford vehicle followed by the Escape Hybrid.

As a race, we humans are obsessed with the notion of "best." Whether it's generations of on-point marketing or a strand of latent genetic code that pushes us to shack up with a better mate, we just can't shake the disposition. It's what drives our society forward – the quest for the latest product that promises a slightly improved experience or that one feature that eclipses the competition. It's why we can happily saunter up to the feeding trough at the local buffet instead of poking at wild boars with pointy sticks. It is, simply put, a good thing.

The domestic full-size truck segment provides perhaps the greatest study in "best" available. Each new model year gives the Big Three one more shot at outdoing each other in the areas of power, towing capacity, interior room and fuel economy. Neither Ford, General Motors nor Chrysler skips the chance to brag about its latest advancements over the other two. But as with everything, there can be only true king. In this feudal system, it's Ford F-150, which has attracted more buyers than the Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra and Ram 1500 for years. Why? We took to the saddle of Ford's latest entry-level F-Series equipped with the company's new 5.0-liter V8 to find out.

Ford hasn't pulled any punches over the past 24 months. With General Motors and Chrysler both in the throes of significant corporate overhauls, the Blue Oval has unleashed a torrent of product updates that have included fresh styling, well-executed interiors and drivetrains that deliver both power and efficiency with little compromise. The F-150 hasn't missed out on any of that mid-cycle love thanks to four brand-new engine options, though the vehicle's exterior has remained largely untouched compared to the 2010 model. Ford shouldn't take that as a slight, however. The pickup received a slight fascia update just last year, and the grille, headlights and bumper still look fresh up front.

The F-150 may be much less in-your-face than the Ram 1500, but its nose seems more vertical and muscular than the squat lines of the Silverado. We aren't overly smitten with the squared-off grille and similarly angular headlights, but the treatment lends a dose of Super Duty presence to the half-ton pickup. Our tester came in SuperCrew configuration with a 145-inch wheelbase and an optional $1,600 chrome package, which threw in California cowboy treatments like flashy step bars, tow loops and 18-inch wheels.

As much as we'd like to scoff at those step-bars, the truth is that unless you're directly related to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, you'll to need them to get inside. With a floor-height of around 24 inches, ingress is an exercise in mountaineering. Around back, our tester came packing a short box with a total length of just over 66 inches – not nearly as large as the optional eight-foot bed, but more than adequate for light-duty tasks like hauling gravel or other landscaping goodies.

Like most full-size trucks, the 2011 F-150 uses extremely tall bed rails that make it impossible for an average-sized adult to reach objects in the bed. At around 57 inches from the ground, the rails land at arm-pit level on the typical adult, rendering limbs all but useless to leverage grocery bags from inside. If you want to transport small items in the bed, be prepared to drop the tail gate or climb the tire to rescue them from their fortifications.

Still, that height isn't simply designed to help give the F-150 an imposing stance, though that's certainly a byproduct of the design. Instead, the extra lift minimizes wheel well intrusion into the box. As a result, there's more cubic volume to be had for loads of loose materials than if the bed sat lower on the frame. Ford has also included four heavy-duty tie downs that are sturdy enough to take the abuse of a ratchet strap. That's a good thing since the bed rails are incredibly thin and trimmed in plastic.

Despite the gentrified exterior accouterments, the interior remained appropriately utilitarian. We were treated to cloth captain's buckets up front with a cavernous center console. If you were struck with the notion, you could easily house two one-gallon milk jugs inside. The driver is met by an excellent multi-function steering wheel with a faux-leather wrapped appearance. The tiller feels suitably meaty and durable for a vehicle of this size.

Like other Ford products, the steering wheel also features a new five-way button for controlling a small, high-resolution LCD screen nestled between the tachometer and speedometer. Though somewhat distracting to navigate while in motion, the categories are logically assembled and provide information on fuel economy, vehicle systems and even pitch and yaw for your off-roading excursions. Needless to say, that last screen was our favorite.

Meanwhile, the dash is laid in well-grained, dual-tone plastic accented by chrome-bezel air vents. The center stack offers two cubbies sized for either a mobile phone or an MP3 player, which we found more accommodating than the usually lauded SYNC system. Despite our best efforts, the audio system refused to acknowledge our iPod and would only occasionally play music from a thumb drive. The good news is that when the technology decided to cooperate, the 2011 F-150 didn't disappoint in the sound quality department.

Thanks to our SuperCrew cab, rear passengers were afforded an impressive amount of space. There's easily enough leg, head and hip room for three corn-fed boys out back. Even better, the rear bench stows quickly with the lift of two under-seat paddles to provide a huge interior cargo space. With 31 inches between the front console and the bottom of the folded seats, and 57 inches from door to door, there's ample room for Ikea boxes or a large flat-screen television. It's simply impressive. What's more, the flat floor is perfect for safely transporting long guns under the rear bench while still ferrying passengers around.

Ford threw the engineering gauntlet down on the 2011 F-150 drivetrain, and as a result, buyers can have the truck with a range of new engine options. Ford offers a slew of powertrains for the F-150 depending on trim, including a new twin-turbo EcoBoost 3.5-liter V6, a naturally-aspirated 3.7-liter V6 and a more muscular 6.2-liter V8. Our tester came packing the line-up's middle child – a new 5.0-liter V8 engine with 360 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque coupled to a six-speed automatic gearbox.

A two-speed transfer case with electronic shift-on-the-fly control handles four-wheel-drive duties, too. Despite being only the second-most powerful engine choice on the option sheet, the twin-overhead cam V8 makes for an impressively quick truck. While perfectly content to burble around in the lower registers of the tachometer, quick right-foot thrusts will yield giggle-inducing propulsion.

At the same time, the engineers at Ford have managed to also squeeze respectable fuel economy out of the engine. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, our tester is good for 14 miles per gallon in the city and 19 mpg on the highway. We managed 15.4 mpg during our time with the truck; just below the combined estimate of 16 mpg.

In a world increasingly awash with crossovers and neutered capability, the F-150 provides a refreshingly traditional driving experience. At no point are you under the impression that you're piloting anything other than a legitimate pickup. With its tall ride height, the vehicle affords plenty of visibility, and the dish-plate-sized sideview mirrors make for easy lane changes. Ford did an excellent job of properly weighting the electronic power-assisted steering as well. Low speed maneuvers are handled with just the right amount of assist, even in four-wheel drive. That's impressive given that our tester wore sizable 275/65/R18 Goodyear Wrangler rubber at all four corners. On the road, the steering avoids feeling overly light even at highway speeds.

Additionally, the column-mounted shifter is a well-thought out piece that allows for quick and easy gear changes from Drive to Reverse and back again, something that's essential for properly positioning a trailer or negotiating this big rig into tight spots off road. The shifter is built with additional resistance between Park and Reverse, which means the driver can simply lift the shifter to back up without having to lower his or her eyes from the task at hand. We approve.

The shift-on-the-fly four-wheel drive is as simple to operate as flicking the dial on the dash from 4x2 to 4x4, though if you want to drop into low range you'll need to slide the transmission into Neutral.

When you aren't creeping around your front yard in low-range, the 2011 F-150 is fairly mild-mannered on the road. With an empty bed, the truck feels characteristically buckboard, though with comfortable seats and an effective cruising range of 684 miles, we could certainly survive a multi-tank road trip and still be able to walk afterwards. There's also surprisingly little road noise at highway speed, and while the stock exhaust sounds plenty throaty under hard acceleration, the back pipes are quiet under steady speed.

We did notice that the F-150 is graced with an incredibly lax traction control system. This is about as far from an electronic nanny as you can get. Familiarize yourself with the skinny pedal, crank the steering wheel and get ready for some tail-wagging glory with an empty bed. It's exactly what you want to see from a V8-powered, rear-wheel-drive creation, though we have to imagine the system would be a little less entertaining under wet skies and emergency acceleration.

The good news is that should you get too frisky with the go pedal, the brakes will do a bang-up job of bringing things under control. Ford built the F-150 with four-wheel ventilated disc brakes with 13.8-inch rotors, mashed by dual-piston calipers up front. The back axle is graced with 13.7-inch rotors held by single-piston calipers, and nose dive is kept to a minimum.

Thanks to the power on hand, a stout boxed frame and an optional 3.73 rear-axle ratio, this particular variation of the F-150 brings a 9,300-pound tow rating to the table. We were unable to strap a trailer to the pickup while it was in our care, though we settled for the next best thing to determine how the 5.0-liter V8 stood up under a load. After a quick visit to the local nursery, we loaded the bed with a cubic yard of mulch. The material weighs in at around 800 pounds per yard, which is a little more than half the pickup's 1,487 pound cargo capacity. The extra weight was barely perceptible on the road both in acceleration and braking, though the poundage did go a long way toward smoothing out the bumps brought about by the set of stiff rear springs. Still, the 5.0-liter V8 was happy to plug along in overdrive up a long grade without needing to drop a gear.

In fact, the 5.0-liter V8 would be the perfect engine for the 2011 F-150 if it weren't for one problem. In our configuration, the more powerful and efficient 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine is just $750 more than the middle-weight V8. For that stack of cash, you're rewarded with five additional horsepower and 40 more pound-feet of torque. More importantly, that twist comes on a full 1,750 rpm sooner, while turning out one mpg more in both city and highway driving. Our colleagues at AutoblogGreen even hypermiled an EcoBoost-equipped F-150 recently to over 30 mpg. It's hard to argue with more power and efficiency when combined with better delivery.

So why does Ford even bother offering the less efficient, less powerful V8? Our guess is that the move has something to do with some truck buyers proclivity to always prefer V8 power. Also, adding the 5.0-liter V8 to the F-150 lineup likely helps defray the cost of the engine for the Mustang GT, which helps keep the pony car affordable. Good by us.

Our 2011 F-150 XLT 4x4 SuperCrew wore an MSRP of $38,965, which included extras like the 3.73 axle ratio, tow package, keyless entry and various aesthetic and convenience packages, as well as a $975 charge for destination and delivery. That's no small chunk of money, but considering that the SuperCrew cab allows this pickup to serve both as a family hauler and a work machine, we can begin to forgive the price tag. Ford will let you get out the door with a four-wheel-drive work truck under $30,000, but you can forget niceties like power equipment, cruise control and media management.

While General Motors and Chrysler have both stepped up their full-size truck efforts in serious ways over the past few years, it's easy to see why Ford still holds the sales title. The F-150 is comfortable and tame enough to handle city traffic and mall parking lots with the family, and at the same time, it's also supremely capable of lugging a load of material back from the local co-op. It toes a fine line between civility and functionality and does it in an attractive, masculine package. All hail the king.

DEARBORN, Mich., May 5, 2011 – People told Gary Mueller that he should probably think about getting a new truck when his 2002 Ford F-350 Super Duty was nearing 300,000 miles.

That was more than 700,000 miles ago.

Today, Mueller says he has no plans – or reason – to retire the truck, even though it now has more than 1,020,000 miles on the clock.

The reason, Mueller says, is that his F-350 maintains its durability, reliability and comfort, along with the special bond some truck owners seem to have with their vehicles.

“This truck isn’t just a truck; it’s an extension of me,” said Mueller. “I take care of it and it returns the favor. I see no reason at all to think about retiring it.”

Mueller isn’t the only one driving a Ford F-Series truck with a lot of miles. In fact, Ford has more full-size pickup trucks on the road with at least 250,000 miles than any other automaker.

“Trucks like Mr. Mueller’s prove time and time again that Built Ford Tough is more than just a slogan; it’s a promise of proven durability and reliability,” said Doug Scott, Ford truck group marketing manager.

Taking the scenic route to 1 million
Mueller retired from Ford in 2000. In the six years leading up to his retirement, he worked as many overtime hours as he could while developing plans to travel North America. He invested the money in stocks with hopes to earn even more on his savings.

Then, the market crashed and Mueller lost 70 percent of his “fun money.” His travel dreams seemed to be dead.

A sliver of hope came to him one day, however, at a fast food restaurant. He bumped into a relative who told him about a friend who was seeing the country on the cheap by towing large recreational vehicle campers, or RVs, and delivering them to buyers.

After going on a test trip as a passenger, Mueller was hooked. He bought a truck and launched his new career as an RV hauler. After around 18 months, Mueller decided he needed a new truck. That’s when he bought the new 2002 Ford F-350 Super Duty with a 7.3-liter Power Stroke® diesel V8 that has been his companion ever since.

Mueller travels between 600 and 800 miles most days and has been to 48 states and seven provinces in Canada. He doesn’t know how many RVs he has hauled over the years but said he has hauled about 40 through the first four months of 2011.

The RV trailers he tows start at about 11,000 pounds, a sizeable load for most pickups but not even testing Super Duty’s maximum trailer tow capability. The 2002 model F-350 Super Duty had a maximum fifth-wheel tow capability of 14,400 pounds. Showing the ever-improving nature of Ford F-Series trucks, the 2011 F-350 Super Duty has a maximum fifth-wheel tow capability of 22,600 pounds. Scott said Super Duty’s best-in-class towing capability enables Mueller to constantly haul the large RVs and sets Ford apart from competitors.

“For years we’ve had a huge advantage over the competition when it comes to towing weight,” said Scott. “That’s why if you’re going to do a job like this, there’s only one vehicle that can handle it day in and day out with confidence and that’s the Ford Super Duty.”

Truck delivers RVs – and fuel efficiency
Mueller said that his F-350 Super Duty gets about 20 mpg when delivering RVs – a crucial number to him since he is responsible for most of the expenses.

“As long as I can keep getting 20 mpg, I’ll keep hauling,” Mueller said. “That’s the only way it makes economic sense.”

With its 7.3-liter Power Stroke diesel, Mueller’s truck is equipped with the first generation of the Power Stroke engine, available between 1994 and 2002. It produces 275 horsepower and 520 lb.-ft. of torque.

By comparison, the fourth-generation Power Stroke diesel – the 6.7-liter version introduced in the 2011 F-Series Super Duty – produces 400 horsepower and a whopping 800 lb.-ft. of torque.

Among the features of the prior generation engine in Mueller’s truck are direct injection and turbocharging, which help deliver improved fuel economy with the high torque required of a powerful tow vehicle. The 2011 Super Duty with the all-new 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel engine has further refined fuel injection turbocharging technology for even higher levels of efficiency.

Mueller said his driving habits also contribute to the outstanding gas mileage. He avoids fast starts and stops. If weather conditions create too much drag, he parks the truck. And he keeps the rpm near 2,000 whenever he can while generally staying between 60 and 62 mph.

“I will see the same people pass me two or three times a day,” Mueller said. “They’re going 70 or 80 mph, and have to keep stopping for fuel.”

Mueller said he also maintains the truck properly. He has had the oil changed more than 100 times and the tires have been replaced 10 times.

An office on wheels
Mueller said another reason he has been able to log more than 1 million miles on his truck is because of its comfort level.

His truck features cloth seats along with the XLT package that includes power seats, windows and mirrors.

“I wouldn’t have been able to put so many miles on it if I was uncomfortable,” Mueller said.

Scott said other pickup trucks oftentimes force buyers to choose between capability and refinement. He said Mueller’s truck is an example of how Ford F-Series has been a leader in allowing customers to avoid this compromise and enjoy both class-leading capability and comfort.

“For people like Mueller, their trucks are their office. They spend hours and hours in their trucks, so we designed and engineered our truck interiors with that in mind,” said Scott.

Considering the Super Duty’s combination of comfort and fuel efficiency, and the way Mueller knows exactly how his truck will respond to certain conditions and driving actions, he said he hopes to continue his sightseeing while delivering those big RVs throughout the U.S. and Canada.

“I don’t think I could be any happier with a truck,” said Mueller.

FORD REPORTS $2.6 BILLION 2011 FIRST QUARTER NET INCOME AS ONE FORD PLAN CONTINUES STRONG PROGRESS+

First quarter net income was $2.6 billion, or 61 cents per share, a $466 million increase from first quarter 2010. Pre-tax operating profit was $2.8 billion, or 62 cents per share, an increase of $827 million from first quarter 2010. Ford has posted a pre-tax operating profit for seven consecutive quarters.
Automotive pre-tax operating profit was $2.1 billion for the first quarter, an increase of $936 million from first quarter 2010.
Ford Credit reported a pre-tax operating profit of $713 million for the first quarter, a decrease of $115 million from first quarter 2010.
Total Company revenue was $33.1 billion in the first quarter, up $5 billion from first quarter 2010.
Ford generated positive Automotive operating-related cash flow of $2.2 billion in the first quarter, an improvement of $2.3 billion from first quarter 2010.
Ford continued to reduce Automotive debt with an additional $2.5 billion of net debt reductions in the first quarter as a result of the redemption of all outstanding Trust Preferred Securities.
Ford ended the first quarter with Automotive gross cash of $21.3 billion, an increase of $800 million compared to the end of 2010. Ford’s Automotive gross cash exceeded debt by $4.7 billion, an improvement of $3.3 billion from year end 2010.
Ford ended the first quarter with $30.7 billion in total Automotive liquidity, an increase of $2.8 billion from year end 2010.
For full year results, Ford plans to deliver continued improvement in pre-tax operating profit and Automotive operating-related cash flow compared to 2010.

“Our team delivered a great quarter, with solid growth and improvements in all regions,” said Alan Mulally, Ford president and CEO. “We continue to accelerate our One Ford plan around the world, delivering on our commitments to serve our global customers with a full family of best-in-class vehicles and deliver profitable growth for all, despite uncertain economic conditions.”

First quarter 2011 pre-tax operating profit was $2.8 billion, or 62 cents per share, an increase of $827 million, or 16 cents per share, from first quarter 2010. This increase reflects improved profits in each Automotive segment, led by a strong performance in North America and solid improvement in Europe.

First quarter Automotive pre-tax operating profit was $2.1 billion, an increase of $936 million from first quarter 2010. Ford's Automotive business is benefiting from growth in both volume and per-unit net revenue. This revenue growth, along with scale benefits from increasing volume, are driving improvements in profitability and operating margin – despite higher commodity costs and planned cost increases associated with the investments Ford is making in its products, brand and future growth. The profitability improvement also reflects Ford's stronger balance sheet through lower net interest expense.

First quarter Ford Credit pre-tax operating profit was $713 million, a decrease of $115 million from first quarter 2010, consistent with previous guidance.

North America posted a first quarter pre-tax operating profit of $1.8 billion, a $591 million increase from first quarter 2010. Europe reported a first quarter pre-tax operating profit of $293 million, an increase of $186 million from first quarter 2010. South America and Asia Pacific Africa also posted increased pre-tax operating profits.

Ford’s first quarter revenue was $33.1 billion, an increase of $5 billion from first quarter 2010.

Ford generated positive Automotive operating-related cash flow of $2.2 billion in the first quarter, an improvement of $2.3 billion from first quarter 2010.

Ford also made significant progress in strengthening its balance sheet, with a net reduction in Automotive debt of $2.5 billion in the first quarter, including the redemption of all outstanding Trust Preferred Securities. Ford ended the first quarter with $21.3 billion of Automotive gross cash, an increase of $800 million compared to Dec. 31, 2010. Automotive gross cash exceeded debt by $4.7 billion, an improvement of $3.3 billion from year end 2010.

Ford took action to increase overall liquidity, including an additional $1.7 billion of capacity on its secured revolving credit facility, reflecting Ford’s improved credit profile and overall credit conditions. Ford’s Automotive liquidity totaled $30.7 billion, an increase of $2.8 billion from year end 2010.

“Our business is improving as we achieve growth in volume and revenue, while maintaining our focus on increasing competitiveness,” said Lewis Booth, Ford executive vice president and chief financial officer. “The quarter was another encouraging step as we invest for an even stronger business for the future.”

FIRST QUARTER 2011 HIGHLIGHTS

AUTOMOTIVE SECTOR

Total Automotive pre-tax operating profit in the first quarter was $2.1 billion, an increase of $936 million from first quarter 2010. The increase is explained by favorable volume and mix and favorable net pricing, that more than offset higher contribution costs – which include material costs, warranty expense and freight and duty costs. The higher contribution costs were driven by higher commodity costs and material excluding commodities -- primarily added content, technology and features for Ford’s new products. Other costs, primarily structural, increased, reflecting the impact of new product launches, investment in future growth, and higher volumes.

Total vehicle wholesales in the first quarter were 1.4 million units, up 150,000 units from first quarter 2010, as every business segment reported higher wholesales.

Total Automotive revenue in the first quarter was $31 billion, up $5.6 billion from first quarter 2010.

North America: In the first quarter, North America reported a pre-tax operating profit of $1.8 billion, compared with a profit of $1.2 billion a year ago. The increase reflects favorable volume and mix and favorable net pricing. These were offset partially by higher contribution costs, primarily material costs to support new products, as well as increases for commodities, warranty, and freight and duty. Other costs, primarily structural, to support higher volumes and new product launches, also increased. Revenue in the first quarter was $17.9 billion, up $3.8 billion from a year ago.

South America: In the first quarter, South America reported a pre-tax operating profit of $210 million, compared with a profit of $203 million a year ago. The increase reflects favorable net pricing and volume and mix, offset largely by higher costs and unfavorable exchange. Revenue in the first quarter was $2.3 billion, up $300 million from a year ago.

Europe: In the first quarter, Europe reported a pre-tax operating profit of $293 million, compared with a profit of $107 million a year ago. The increase was more than explained by favorable net pricing, favorable volume and mix, favorable exchange and higher subsidiary profits. Revenue in the first quarter was $8.7 billion, up $1 billion from a year ago.

Asia Pacific Africa: In the first quarter, Asia Pacific Africa reported a pre-tax operating profit of
$33 million, compared with a profit of $23 million a year ago. The increase is more than explained by lower contribution costs. Revenue in the first quarter, which excludes sales at unconsolidated China joint ventures, was $2.1 billion, up $500 million from a year ago.

Other Automotive: The first quarter Other Automotive loss was $249 million, compared with a loss of $391 million in first quarter 2010. This improvement primarily reflects lower net interest expense, offset partially by unfavorable changes in fair market value adjustments related primarily to Ford’s investment in Mazda.

FINANCIAL SERVICES SECTOR

For the first quarter, the Financial Services sector reported a pre-tax operating profit of $706 million, a decrease of $109 million compared with first quarter 2010.

Ford Motor Credit Company: In the first quarter, Ford Credit reported a pre-tax operating profit of $713 million, compared with a profit of $828 million in first quarter 2010. The decrease is more than explained by lower market valuation adjustments to derivatives and lower receivables volume.

OUTLOOK

Ford remains focused on delivering the key aspects of the One Ford plan, which are unchanged:

Aggressively restructuring to operate profitably at the current demand and changing model mix
Accelerating the development of new products that customers want and value
Financing the plan and improving the balance sheet
Working together effectively as one team, leveraging Ford’s global assets

The One Ford transformation continues in 2011 as Ford launches key products in critical markets, while maintaining a sharp focus on critical business issues, including cost competitiveness, fuel efficiency, investment in emerging markets, and continued improvement in brand health and pricing discipline.

Ford said its performance is off to a great start. Ford is on track to deliver continued improvement in full year pre-tax operating profit and Automotive operating-related cash flow compared to 2010. Based on lower expected profit at Ford Credit, increasing commodity costs, seasonal factors that tend to favor the first half of the year and higher investments and costs related to its longer-term growth and brand plans, quarterly results in the latter part of the year may not be as strong as the first quarter. As the year progresses, Ford said it will take advantage of every opportunity to further strengthen its business.

Ford expects solid profitability for Ford Credit in 2011, although at a lower level than 2010, reflecting primarily the non-recurrence of lower lease depreciation expense and credit loss reserve reductions of the same magnitude as 2010. Ford estimates the profit impact of these two items will reduce profit by about $1.1 billion in 2011 compared to 2010. Ford Credit is projecting distributions of about $3 billion during 2011.

Ford expects U.S. full year industry volume will be in the range of 13 million to 13.5 million units and, for the 19 markets Ford tracks in Europe in the range of 14.5 million to 15.5 million units, including medium and heavy trucks.

In the first quarter, the seasonally adjusted annual rate of sales was 13.4 million in the U.S., and 15.9 million units for the 19 markets Ford tracks in Europe. Despite encouraging first quarter industry levels, Ford is maintaining its present guidance for North America and Europe.

The company expects its full year U.S. total market share and its share of the U.S. retail market as well as European market share to be equal to or improved from 2010. In the first quarter, Ford’s U.S. market share was 16 percent, and European market share was 8.5 percent.

In North America, Ford has increased its J.D. Power dependability ranking; however, the company is addressing some near-term issues, leading to a mixed overall quality outlook for the year.

Ford remains on track to achieve quality improvements in its international operations.

Commodity costs and structural costs each are expected to increase by about $2 billion compared with 2010. The latter is consistent with supporting higher volumes in the short term, as well as Ford’s plan to grow its business, continue to strengthen its brand and improve its products. In the first quarter, Ford’s structural costs increased $400 million compared to first quarter 2010, and commodity costs increased by $300 million.

Ford expects 2011 capital expenditures in the range of $5 billion to $5.5 billion. Capital spending in the first quarter was $900 million.

Ford expects total company second quarter production to be about 1.5 million units, up 12,000 units from a year ago, reflecting continued strong customer demand for its products. The forecast reflects Ford’s best projection, at this time, of the impact of the events in Japan. As always, Ford’s production plans remain consistent with its strategy to match supply to demand.

“Our progress toward delivering profitable growth for all will continue as we aggressively manage short term challenges and opportunities,” said Mulally. “We expect our annual volumes to continue to grow substantially, driven primarily by our growing product strength, a gradually strengthening global economy and an unrelenting focus on improving the competitiveness of all of our operations.”

DEARBORN, Mich., April 21, 2011 – The new 2011 Ford Edge, which offers a suite of innovative safety technologies, is off to a fast start and could gain even more popularity after becoming the latest Ford vehicle to earn a Top Safety Pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (for models built after February 2011).

Ford now has 10 vehicles on the road in the U.S. that have earned Top Safety Picks, which adds to its leading number of top U.S. safety ratings.

“The new Edge is already the most popular midsize crossover and we believe this Top Safety Pick rating will generate even more interest,” said Sue Cischke, Ford group vice president of Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering.

To earn a Top Safety Pick, a vehicle must receive a rating of “good” in offset frontal-, side- and rear-impact crash tests and roof strength evaluations, as well as offer electronic stability control.

The Edge, which launched in late 2010, is off to a fast start with sales up 25 percent in 2011 through March – ending the month as the segment leader with 18 percent of medium crossover sales. Initial demand for the Edge’s driver-aid technologies Edge has been strong. Of the first 101,908 vehicles sold:

80 percent include rear view camera
32 percent include BLIS® (Blind Spot Information System) with cross-traffic alert

“Edge customers value safety and security,” said Eric Peterson, crossover marketing manager. “Safety features are one of the top reasons customers cite for their purchases of Edge and crossovers in general.”

Safety and driver-assist features
The new Edge comes equipped with technologies to help prevent crashes – from parking lot fender benders to high-speed collisions – by warning drivers of the potential for a crash.

“The new Edge delivers features that both help prevent a crash and help minimize occupant injuries when a crash is unavoidable,” said Peterson. “It’s a comprehensive safety story from bumper to bumper.”

Driver-aid and safety technologies include options such as:

Adaptive cruise control, which slows the vehicle to adapt for traffic conditions and maintain a preset distance between vehicles

Collision warning with brake support, which helps reduce speed, automatically pre-charges brakes, provides a red warning light on the windshield as well as an audible beep to help drivers stop more quickly when the system detects a collision is imminent

BLIS with cross-traffic alert, which helps detect vehicles in blind spots during normal driving, as well as traffic approaching from the sides when reversing out of parking spots

Tire Pressure Monitoring System, which alerts drivers when it senses tire pressure is low

MyKey, which allows parents to limit speed and audio volume in their vehicles and is designed to help parents encourage safe driving habits in their teens

“The Edge pioneers the mainstream introduction of crash avoidance technologies with two available class-exclusive radar-based features that help detect and warn drivers of potentially dangerous situations,” Cischke said.

Structural safety and crash protection
Edge features a solid unibody construction, which provides an energy-absorbing structure to help protect occupants. Bumper-to-bumper flow-through side rails, structural design and A-pillars are designed to move crash energy away from occupants. Nearly half of the stiff shell is composed of high-strength steels, such as boron, for both increased strength and reduced weight.

When a crash becomes unavoidable, Edge relies on an array of airbags to protect occupants. Two front dual-stage and two side airbags are joined by a Safety Canopy consisting of side-curtain airbags for front and rear outboard passengers. Personal Safety System™ safety belts feature pretensioners and an energy management system with adjustable D-ring height in the first row.

DEARBORN, Mich., April 12, 2011 – More power and higher fuel economy? Traditionally, you don’t achieve both when you design a new engine.

But Ford powertrain engineers have been rewriting the book on engine design lately, increasing power and fuel economy with each new engine.

A case in point is the new 6.7-liter Power Stroke® diesel V8 offered in the F-Series Super Duty pickup.

When Ford Motor Company engineer Joshua Styron, Ph.D., began work on the combustion system of the new 6.7-liter Power Stroke engine, he believed that careful attention to the design of the pistons plus precise placement of the fuel injectors and glow plugs could result in an engine that delivered more power, higher fuel economy and lower emissions than the engine it was replacing.

He was right.

The 6.7-liter Power Stroke, the first-ever Ford-designed, Ford-engineered and Ford-built diesel heavy-duty pickup engine, is rated at 400 horsepower and 800 lb.-ft. of torque, up from the previous Power Stroke’s 350 horsepower and 650 lb.-ft.

The new engine generates this class-leading power while delivering an impressive 20 percent fuel economy gain over its predecessor, making the Ford Super Duty best in class for fuel economy among heavy-duty pickups.

This week at the SAE World Congress, Styron presents a technical paper detailing how he and his team worked to develop and test the super-efficient combustion system – pistons, fuel injectors and glow plugs – for Ford’s award-winning new Power Stroke diesel V8.

At this year's Congress, Ford engineers are presenting no fewer than 38 papers during the three-day conference, covering a range of topics including engine design, fuel economy, safety, lighting and aerodynamics.

A special engine for a special truck

Because the Ford Super Duty is a work truck designed to haul heavy loads, horsepower and torque had to be the top priority for the new Power Stroke V8 diesel.

Styron said the engineering brief for the 6.7-liter stressed performance. “Four hundred horsepower was the target. Early in the development program, fuel economy was viewed as much less important to this customer than power and torque,” Styron said. “But we believed we could deliver a good combination of both -- 400 horsepower along with fuel economy that was not only significantly better than the old 6.4, but higher than our competitors’ engines, too.”

Making fuel economy a priority on the new Power Stroke was the right move. With oil selling for more than $100 per barrel and diesel fuel at more than $4 a gallon in most parts of the country, Ford Super Duty customers will save money every time they fill up.

The pressure on the Power Stroke engine design team was immense. The outgoing 6.4-liter Power Stroke was nearing the end of its run in the Super Duty and Ford engineers knew improvements were on the way from competitive diesels in General Motors and Dodge trucks. Added to that, emissions requirements were tightening for the 2010 model year. So, attention to detail around the combustion system would be the key to delivering a better engine by every standard of measurement.

“To deliver class-leading fuel economy and refinement as well as lower emissions, the combustion system had to make the best use of the limited supply of fresh air entering the engine,” said Styron. “Combustion systems with the best air utilization extract the most heat from the fuel, produce less soot and NOx, and minimize the energy required to pump fresh air into the engine.”

Styron and his team used computer simulations to evaluate piston bowl shapes, precise placement of the fuel spray within the combustion chamber, glow plug positioning and other factors. Following consultations with diesel engine experts at Ford's Dunton Technical Center in Great Britain and the Ford Research Lab in Aachen, Germany, Styron's team built two single-cylinder prototype engines. A comprehensive test plan was developed to optimize each layout and finally choose the one best performer.

The winning design features a chamfered re-entrant bowl, fine-tuned injector targeting and optimum air swirl that is matched to a super-efficient spray pattern.

“This design provides the best mixing of fuel and air in a heavy duty truck engine,” said Styron. When the first running prototypes of the 6.7-liter Power Stroke were built, the combustion chamber design was exactly the same as the one chosen from the single-cylinder test engine.

“The combustion system is really the heart of the engine. It determines the engine’s ability to use air,” added Styron. “Get it wrong, and you end up with poor fuel economy and higher emissions. The fact that we got the answer right saved us time and money. The end result is that Ford Super Duty customers now have the most powerful and fuel efficient diesel pickup engine money can buy.”
